Starsight by Brandon Sanderson

Spensa shoots for the stars...literally.

So this is a sequel, right?

Correct. Starsight is book two of the Skyward series, and this one…it’s different. How do I explain this without spoilers? We left off with Spensa learning a few things: 1. She can jump through space using cytonic hyperdrives. 2. Her “defect” allows her to “hear” the stars (meaning, she can listen in on Krell communications). 3. Those evil aliens are actually trying to keep the people of Detritus trapped on their own planet.

Now the only hope for the human race is to find a way off their planet. Cobb concocts a dangerous plan, but it’s almost impossible to carry out. Until it’s not. Spensa finds a way to initiate the first part of the plan—infiltrate the Krell. Crazy? Yes. Impossible? Read to find out.

Love is in the air…

Sorta. If you read Skyward, then you’re shipping two characters. You know you are. But it’s not the main focus in book two. *Cue the groans* I know, me too. BUT Sanderson sets up one hell of a tease at the very beginning.

The best part…

If you think the Krell is the only alien race Spensa has trouble with, think again. We’re dealing with species the size of Furbies, sentient vapors that smell like cinnamon, and E.T.–looking things that eat other planets for breakfast (literally). Sanderson tapped into the depths of his imagination and delivered in the new character department.

The worst part…

The old character department is left with cobwebs. Since most of this book revolves around Spensa’s new mission, we barely see any of the people we grew to know and love in the first one. That means less of Kimmalyn’s strange sayings and fewer opportunities for Jorgen to finally get that stick out of his ass. Secondary characters like Nedd and Arturo weren’t quite as developed as a few others in book one, so I was expecting them to shine in Starsight. Unfortunately, they continue to fade into the background.

Why should you read this book?

  • You’ll find out what Doomslug really is.
  • More flight battle scenes.
  • Spensa is still a badass.

And if that doesn’t sell you…

M-Bot is back and sassier than ever.
